LLM Trafik - Highway traffic image is usually offline during weekends!

Malaysia is well known for traffic jams along the highways and roads during the weekly peak hours as well as weekends.

There are many websites one can check on the traffic conditions e.g. ITIS, DBKL Traffic Status as well as LLM Trafik.

As I travel regularly on PLUS Highways during weekends, I am a frequent visitor to LLM Trafik. Just to check on the traffic conditions via its video streaming or still pictures. Those info can then assist me in deciding on alternative routes if traffic conditions are chaotic, which is usually the case.

My grouse is that LLM Trafik feature of its Traffic Status always consistently produce no images of the current traffic conditions during the weekend period. Sometimes I just wonder what is the purpose of LLM having this feature on it's website in the first place.

Wishlist: Garmin or Tom Tom with traffic updates!

Must Have Applications for Motorola Z10

Must have applications installed currently on Motorola Z10

1) Swiss Manager 1.80 – It’s a task manager just like the ones in your pc. Let’s take for example you open an sms, the Message program is opened by your phone. But when you go back to the main menu, the Message program still runs in the background, taking up yr RAM space as well as draining the battery. Swiss Manager allows you to stop any unused applications running on your phone.

2) Opera Mini Browser 4.2 – Web browser.

3) Pdf+ Standard - To view Pdf files.

4) CorePlayer – To open & play most audio & video files. Also useful to view video podcast and to watch movies during commute to and from work.

Firmware:

Firmware currently used is the one from Singapore. It’s by far the most stable. I’ve tried all firmwares ranging from the original firmware by O2, Swisscom, Ukraine & Russian. The Russian & Ukraine’s firmware is similar to the one from Singapore, but Singapore’s firmware is somehow more stable. My Moto Z10 never had any problem after installing the Singapore’s firmware.

Memory:

It came stock with a 1Gb Micro SD Card. I’ve upgraded it to an 8Gb Micro SD Card and works a charm. Need the space for all my video functions as well as storing my mp3’s. Based on motorola’s website, Motorola Z10 can actually be fitted with a 32Gb Micro SD card! But for the time being, I’ll still stick to 8Gb.

Have to admit that the video and camera quality is pretty excellent for a camera phone/camcorder phone.

SMS undeliverable on O2 UK Pay As You Go (PAYG)

Lately, international sms sent via O2 PAYG have failed for no apparent reason.

After composing each text messages and pressing the send button, immedeately a notification from O2 is received stating "Message 23xxxxxxx88 to 65xxxxxxxx45, cannot be delivered." It's as if there wasn't even an attempt to send the sms by O2 in the first place. The receipient number is valid and previous sms sent to the same number were succesful and without a hassle.

What's frustrating is that each failed sms were still charged! Haven't complained yet, but if situation persists, I'm gonna.

200Mbps broadband by Virgin Media, UK

That's what UK is all about, fast, reliable internet speeds at relatively low costs. Today Virgin Media would begin testing for it's 200Mbps broadband service to selected users in Kent.

When will the broadband service in Malaysia wake up and smell the coffee? Malaysia is pretty relatively stuck with Streamyx 1.0Mbps. And that costs a whoppa too. The other rivals in the Malaysian broadband market are more or less the same, high costs at relatively reliable but still "slow" speed (when compared to neigbours like Singapore). There's Jaring & Time, but they are hardly worth a mention. Basically there's no other broadband alternative than TMNet's Streamyx.

Don't get me even started on 3G/HSDPA in Malaysia. That's even worse. Albeit for Celcom or Maxis. They are both plain crap especially in well populated areas like Kuala Lumpur & Petaling Jaya. The only one time that I had a decent uninterruptible 3G/HSDPA connection in Malaysia was during a visit to Langkawi, Kedah. Surprising? Well no one else on Langkawi island bothers to use 3G, so the good speed is due to lack of users.

Please unmonopolise the internet broadband market in Malaysia.

Virgin pilots 200Mbps broadband

Virgin Media is piloting broadband speeds of 200Megabit per second (Mbps) for a small group of users in the UK.

Following successful trials in the lab, 100 "lead adopters" in Kent will have access to the high speeds, believed to be among the fastest in the world.

Virgin will be using the high speeds to test applications such as 1080p high definition TV and 3DTV.

Manchester United sweeps Arsenal at the Emirates!

Whew what a game! Manchester United is rock awesome. Last night was probably one of the best displays of a Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium, London.

Although Arsenal had a bright first few minutes, after the 2 goals by Park Ji Sung & Cristiano Ronaldo, it was basically game over. Now it's either Barca or Chelski in the finals. Sir Alex Ferguson cheekily answered one question of "Which team he prefers to see in the finals?" and said "Neither, he wished Manchester United gets a bye in the finals."

Read article below - From The Times UK, 6 May 2009

'Men against boys' as Manchester United crush Arsenal

Sir Alex Ferguson urged his Manchester United players to make history by retaining the Champions League after booking their place in the final last night courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate win over Arsenal.

An early goal from Park Ji Sung and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo put them on their way to a 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium, the comprehensive nature of the win emphasised by the rows of empty seats visible when Robin van Persie scored Arsenal’s consolation from the penalty spot in the 76th minute after Darren Fletcher had been sent off for a professional foul on Cesc Fàbregas. It is a decision that will rule the United midfield player out of the final in Rome on May 27.

Television replays suggested that Fletcher had won the ball, although he had also tugged back Fàbregas by the arm. Uefa confirmed that no appeal is possible against the decision by Roberto Rosetti, the Italian referee, as they can be made only on grounds of mistaken identity. Paul Scholes - who missed the 1999 final because of suspension - and Gary Neville went to the dressing-room to console him.

Ferguson described Fletcher’s absence as a personal tragedy, though it was put into perspective when it emerged that two of the United manager’s grandchildren had been seriously injured in a car crash yesterday.

Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra, who went into the match one booking away from missing the final because of a ban, emerged unscathed and can line up against Chelsea or Barcelona, who meet this evening.

Ferguson has frequently stated that his failure to bring more European Cups to Old Trafford is his biggest disappointment in football, his two triumphs coming nine years apart, but he has the opportunity to make a significant piece of history.

The last club to lift the trophy in successive years were AC Milan in 1989 and 1990. A large party from Milan was at the Emirates last night, David Beckham and Mathieu Flamini experiencing conflicting emotions at the fate of their former clubs.

“From the club’s point of view we should have won this cup more times and it’s another opportunity for us,” Ferguson said. “We have the quality, energy and ambition to do it again and it’s a hungry team. When the chips are down they don’t let me down. We’re more than capable.”

Ferguson reserved special praise for Ronaldo, who effectively killed off the tie by beating Manuel Almunia with a 41-yard free kick in the eleventh minute before scoring a magnificent counter-attacking goal midway through the second half. “They could not handle him,” Ferguson said. “The midfield was working its socks off, but we needed someone to give them real problems and Ronaldo in that form, he’s a fantastic player.”

Evra delivered a damning assessment of Arsène Wenger’s team. “It was 11 men against 11 boys,” the defender said. “They’re just too young to compete. Chelsea and Barcelona are on another level compared to Arsenal. The difference wasn’t just experience, it was quality, too. It’s not just about playing pretty. We’re pretty too, but we also score goals and we also defend well.”

Ferguson expressed sympathy for Wenger, who described the defeat as the biggest disappointment of his career. “The fans were up for a big night and to disappoint people, it hurts really,” the Arsenal manager said. “The game was over before it started and that’s the most difficult thing to swallow. We can only look at ourselves. It’s very disappointing to fight such a long way and then to give the game away like we did tonight.”

Can't watch full length video on Veoh with Mac OS 10.3.9

It's been a while since I booted the old iBook G4. Mainly because still haven't upgraded it to Leopard. Just found out that I could no longer watch full length videos on Veoh.

Apparently to watch these videos, you got to download the Veoh web player, but it doesn't support OS 10.3.9 but only those of OS 10.4 and above. Darn! Lots of people are already complaining in forums since they implemented this late last year.

Real Madrid 2-6 Barcelona! What a game! How on earth will Chelsea stop Barca this Wednesday? It will sure be a cracker.

Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), Kuala Lumpur

As a norm around the world, Malaysia also has an airport that predominantly caters for budget carriers. Just like Stansted Airport (STN) in London that mainly serves for RyanAir & Easyjet, Malaysia has LCCT that at the moment mainly caters for AirAsia.

It's funny how Tiger Airways (budget carrier from Singapore), Jetstar, Jet Airways & ValueAir can still all use Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). And these are all categorised as Budget Carriers. I applaud them for using KLIA. Besides KLIA is really underutilised, KLIA is not hectic at all. Besides by using KLIA, you can get more connecting flights to other destinations around the world, when comparing it with LCCT. This really benefits their passengers.

Eventhough LCCT is only "a stones throw" away from KLIA terminal. Passengers would need to go in a sort of semi circle road to reach KLIA. It's actually a 20km journey from LCCT to KLIA. However there are buses & taxis that serve these route.

Sometimes I just wonder why the government of Malaysia didn't want to grant AirAsia's request during it's infancy years to use the old Subang Airport (SZB). Now, that airport is used by Firefly & Berjaya Air. Another thing to ponder, why Firefly is allowed to use Subang airport?

Another interesting thing, LCCT also uses KUL as its airport code. The same as KLIA. So be alert. However, it is pretty easy to figure out, because only AirAsia & AirAsia X uses LCCT. I'm not sure about any other airlines that are using LCCT at the moment.

AirAsia did request for permission to build another budget terminal nearby, but it was rejected by the government. The government instead promised to upgrade LCCT with extra facilities and a connecting train (ERL - just like the ones from KL Sentral to KLIA) to KLIA. This would surely enhance air travel and at the same time reap huge benefits to the passengers, as well as KLIA. When will this be completed?? They same 2011, 2012... but we'll see.

Don't upgrade to IE8 just yet

I'm usually not too fussy with internet browsers. Most of the time I use the default Internet Explorer browser on Windows. Just couldn't be bothered too much to use Mozilla, Opera, Chrome or all sorts of other browsers out there. Of course on a Mac I would use Safari, but somehow I just don't fancy the Safari on Windows.

If you are a regular user of IE browser, you might have been tempted to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) as has been widely promoted on the web. Or if you do set your Windows Update on automatic, you might have been alerted to uprgade to IE8 in one of it's regular update.

I suggest you to hold off your thoughts to upgrading to IE8, well at least wait a couple of months or so before you do.

I accidentally updated all my Windows Update packs, including IE8. So after realising that I have done just that, decided to test IE8. Well the experience wasn't really that pleasing. They all said that IE8 would compliment Vista. So let's see.

Firstly, eventhough IE8 do have some nice features, my CPU usage was revving at an all time high! I found out from Task Manager that it was due to Windows Sidebar applications. What?? How can IE8 be messing with Windows Sidebar causing the CPU operate near it's maximum capacity?

After browsing the web, in a lot of forums, it is mentioned that IE8 does have conflicts with Windows Sidebar if the DPI Scale settings is not at the normal 96 count. So since my DPI settings was not at 96, apparently that caused my CPU to really spike. But if I changed it back to 96, then everything would be alright.

But I'm just not used to staring at my screen at 96 DPI scales... it's too tiny. So rather that adjusting, I just reverted back to using IE7.

You can easily uninstall IE8 by going to Control Panel, Program and Features, View Installed Updates, then you just uninstall Windows Explorer 8. You would then need to reboot. You are back to IE7.

Of course none of this problem would arise if one is to use Mozilla/Firefox. So another advantage of not using IE there...

Celcom XPAX IDD Promotion - don't get conned!

Most of Malaysia's Celcom XPax users are probably aware of the promotion for cheaper IDD calls made by Celcom Xpax. The promotion of these so called "cheap IDD" calls would run through 31 May 2009.

Don't get conned! Tried calling a mobile phone number in the UK & whoomp, I was slapped with the old rate of RM0.88 per minute. According to the published promotion rate, it should've been 50% off, RM0.44 per minute for calls made to a UK mobile phone.

I've emailed to Celcom Customer Service on the inconsistency of their IDD promotion but 3 weeks have passed & still there's no comment or any kind of response from them. At least give me a refund, it may not be millions but it's still money man. But this is typical of the Malaysian Celcom's attribute, they don't really give a rat's ass about their customers. Perhaps in other civilised countries, customers are kings, but that phrase have yet to catch up in Malaysia.

Celcom, reimburse my overcharge call costs or stop publishing false advertisements.

Mac OS 10.3.9 - Flash 9 (to watch HD video on YouTube)

If you wondered why High Definition (HD) / HQ (High Quality) / high resolution of videos on YouTube, Veoh, DailyMotion or any other video websites could not be played on your Mac, it's probably because you may not have the latest version of Flash.

I still have my iBook G4 running on the OS 10.3.9 (Panther) & could not play certain videos on YouTube. Perform a version check of your Flash here.

Apparently for Mac running OS 10.3.9, the most latest version is Flash Player 9, version

MAC 9,0,159,0. You can find out more about this from this macosxhints.com forum. Just download the Flash package available there & install the correct version for your Mac. Make sure it's the correct version.

I didn't bother uninstalling the previous versions of Mac that was installed on this iBook, but if you got the time to uninstall, then do so. I couldn't be bothered as the iBook is rarely used.

Now you'll be able to watch videos in HD! Neat... Of course it would be better to just upgrade to Leopard or get the most recent Mac / PC.
